MALPRACTICES WITH GAME MEAT

It has been stated before that the next phase in expansion of the game industry would be the production and marketing of game meat for the commercial consumer market. In the long term there are limits to the expansion of hunting opportunities and to the supply of game for production purposes. Bar the scarce species, it would seem that a saturation point is at hand here.

While meat to the value of billions of rands is being imported to supplement local shortages, game meat, especially from marginal areas, could fill this gap. Already, there are welcome signs that game meat as a sough-after product has become more accessible to the consumer public by being more available in supermarkets and butchers, as well as on the menus of top restaurants, which particularly rely on tourists as clients.

What a disappointment that it has now come to light that unacceptable tricks are being used to deceive uninformed consumers, in particular overseas tourists, in the identifying and labelling of game meat.

Congratulations to Prof Louw Hoffman and his team of the Stellenbosch University, who have uncovered this scandal at various restaurants by means of DNA tests, that inter alia common pork is being offered at premium price as warthog; black wildebeest as kudu, deer or blesbok as springbok; kudu as gemsbok, etc.

Game meat consumption will not be promoted in this way. It goes without saying that game producers will have to employ fitting monitoring actions in order to protect the consumer, the credibility of the country as a game / wildlife destination, and their potential future market.
